An Examination of the Pearl is a study of the doctrine and history of Conservative Laestadianism, a small, exclusivist Christian group that is organized in Finland and North America as the SRK and the LLC, respectively. The book also looks at the teachings of Martin Luther, early Christianity, Christian fundamentalism and sectarianism, and the Bible.

An Examination of the Pearl edition by Edwin Suominen Religion Spirituality eBooks

This is the most in-depth analysis of the history and doctrine of the Laestadian movement that I have ever come across. It painstakingly compiles the scattered bits and pieces of the movement's checkered past and carefully analyzes the validity of the movement's most-cherished doctrinal claims. This book tears at the foundation of what it means to be a Laestadian Christian and forces the reader to self-reflect in a way that will forever alter his or her perceptions of the faith.

Without having read the book, close-minded bigots will no doubt come out of the woodwork to decry the author's foray into the deepest recesses of Laestadian doctrinal heritage. They will tell you that everything in this book is out of context or irrelevant. They will claw at anything to maintain their state of complete ignorance. Nevertheless, I think the author says it best when he says:

"...without critical reflection like that found in this book, each [faith] is a self-sustaining doctrinal bubble that quivers unsteadily in the air, vulnerable to being poked by the slightest intrusion of fact."

Take some time to read this book if you are a current, former, or ethnic Laestadian of any of the many different sects still in existence. Read this book even if you're a curious heathen. Doing so will radically develop and change your views about so-called faith, the history of the church, and all of the doctrinal underpinnings that prop up the carefully-selected, sanitized, and misconstrued biblical (or extra-biblical) myths perpetuated from the pulpit each and every week. Prick that doctrinal bubble and see if it can't hold up (the Devil talking here). For some of you, having the correct faith is a matter of life and death; so get to it.

An Examination of the Pearl edition by Edwin Suominen Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

Pure garbage from an atheistic viewpoint. Sure, there are many things wrong with Laestadian Lutherans just as there are with any Christian denomination but you don't critique them from a vantage point of bitterness and unbelief. So the author came to believe in evolution through his limited study of computer programming. Good for him. I wish I could get my 99 cents back as I was looking for at least an objective, if not apologetic, explanation of Laestadianism. This is a manifesto of disenfranchisement and tells me more about the author than anything else.
I am a student of the Bible, theology, and minority religious movements, and I have found much in this volume to feed all three interests. It represents a kind of Lewis and Clark journal, notes taken during an expedition as the author explored his inherited faith. The general direction was familiar to me, as I, too, quit fundamentalism many years ago, and I had many of the same qualms and questions about scripture, many of the same theological bafflements. When does something like the Trinity stop being a venerable Mystery and start looking like a failed theory? At what juncture do "Bible difficulties" become nails in scripture's coffin? And at what point must one decide to seek another spiritual (at least intellectual) home? As you watch author Suominen reach and pass these milestones you may recall when you did, too. Or you may begin to think you should, too.

This book also tells the story, in what could (I think, should) be a doctoral dissertation in Church History, of a tiny sect living in a high-walled theological cell by itself, writing off all fellow Lutherans, to say nothing of other Christian denominations and non-Christian religions, as kindling for hell fire. It is astonishing the enormities that people will take for granted!

The Biblical section reminds me very much of the old Joseph Wheless classic "Is It God's Word?" Wheless was a Methodist of some type, and his journey was closely parallel to Suominen's. It will challenge any reader, and not just the author's former co-religionists.

"An Examination of the Pearl" is spiced with ironic humor but never sinks into bitter polemicism. Its author is scrupulously fair in describing doctrines and policies he now rejects, and as such the book is a model for the "confessions of an ex-believer" genre.
the author obviously spent a lot of time researching to write this book. His review of the 'books of the bible' seemed unnecessary but provided some perspective on the overall theme. My take is that the Laestandians and all of their various branches (especially the independents in Wisconsin) have taken the wonderful word of god and distorted it based upon their own personal insecurities. Exclusive to heaven...what simple minds. This religion (I.e. "Cult"), plays upon conformity and ignorance, kind of like communism. How did that end up? The leaders of this "church" will be the ones that will stand before god and justify their false prophesy. Note to author don't give up on our lord and savior Jesus Christ and the wonderful relationship we can have with him.
This book serves as an invaluable guide for those seeking to navigate the labyrinth that is growing up in modern day Lutheran Laestadianism.
Good and in-depth look at this sect of Lutheranism. There are not of books looking in from outside like this book.
To my knowledge, Suominen's book is the first philosophical critique of Laestadianism in English. It is extensively researched and indispensable to anyone wishing to understand the tenets of this "odd sect" from 19th century Swedish Lapland, its history of spats and schisms, and its preposterous exclusivism. In addition to biblical exegesis, Suominen references (with compassion and humor) the real-world dilemmas of modern Laestadians chafing under conformist dicta. Highly recommended for current and former Laestadians as well as religious history buffs.
