Hungry for revenge, Ma’iitsoh Dine’, the Navajo Wolf, is out for blood. Summoning his darkest powers, the Witch of Ganado circles tribal investigator Charlie Yazzie’s young son. Some may survive the witch’s evil vendetta, but others will die to settle an old score. The unexpected happens when a woman from the past re-emerges to take control in this fast paced thriller critics now hail as the best yet of Chappell’s sensational new southwestern mystery series.

Critics describe R. Allen Chappell’s writing as “embedded and close to the ground” with an intuitive knowledge of the Navajo people and their land. Magpie Speaks, number 5 in the series, cements Chappell's legacy and puts him in the forefront of modern day Navajo Mystery storytellers.

Magpie Speaks A Navajo Nation Mystery (Navajo Nation Mysteries Book 5) - edition by R. Allen Chappell. Literature & Fiction eBooks @ . Reviews

As an avid reader of R. Allen Chappell's Navajo Nation mystery series, I was very excited to discover Magpie Speaks, the latest novel in the series. I was not disappointed. Again Chappell weaves a spell in storytelling similar to the spell the wonderful land of Dinetah holds over me.i especially enjoyed the way he threaded the character of the magpie into the story line with the detail of landscape and culture. Altogether a very enjoyable and satisfying read.
Navajo spiritual beliefs and supernatural myths come to life in this easy-read mystery set in New Mexico, where traditional Navajo ways rub along with the new ways of the college-educated young.

Navajo elder Paul T’Sosi must confront his younger, evil brother—who is known as “the Witch of Ganado”—and somehow coerce/force his brother to undo a powerful curse he’d cast years ago. Paul’s friends help, because if Paul fails, his friends and their families, including babies, are at risk. During this story, three murders are committed on the reservation—all integral to this storyline, as are the traditional Navajo cultural beliefs in trickster magpies, shamans, witches, spirits, skin walkers and the dead.

Whilst reading this interesting supernatural storyline, the murderers and their motives are organically revealed, and retribution (of sorts) exacted. Police investigation is lacking except for informational meetings involving the FBI, Navajo Tribal Police, the county sheriffs and the state police.

I enjoyed this book and recommend it as a easy-read mystery, especially if you like learning about Navajo culture.
I enjoyed all but two of Tony Hillerman's books and thought I'd give R. Allen Chappell a try. I read "Ancient Blood" and enjoyed it. I wished he'd included a glossary for the Navajo words but that shortcoming didn't stop me from reading "Magpie Speaks". And, It had a glossary. Most of the Navajo terms could be noodled out by content but a few were more involved.

I liked the writing, the characters, the structure and enjoyed learning more about Navajo culture and life today. I appreciate Mr. Chappell giving reasonable clues throughout the story.

If someone wishes to correct a typo, I'm pretty sure that "bother's truck" on page 166 should be "brother's trucfk".
I have read other books in the series. This one is a delightful tale of the Navajo people, a continuation really of life on the Rez. It takes a bit in the beginning to wade through all the Navajo names, but once you get that down, it is smooth sailing. There are lots of witches, a few murders a lot of mystery and even some hidden treasure. The Author has a great sense of humor, even introducing into this book an Irish Archeologist named George Armstrong Custer. There is some great history of the Dine' people and their lives on the reservation, being sheep herders around the Shiprock and Four Corners Region.Anyone who think The Tribes do not have great senses of humor have not been paying attention. I gave this book the highest rating I could, because it is so well written. Cannot wait to read the next installment.
I am enjoying this series more with every book.. this one is the best yet...I love the ensemble of characters..love the indepth descriptions of Navajo life and thought..old and new..love the progression and development of the characters.. this latest book brings back some old friends and surprises us with a character from well.. .I dont want to spoil anything here but I thought it was genius on the author's part )..am I gushing? well that is because this was such a good read..at every level..story.. character development..lore.. I am really looking forward to the next installment..great work Mr. Chappell!
Navajo Nation Mysteries Book 5, Magpie Speaks continues with principle characters, Charlie Yazzie, Thomas Begay and Harley Ponyboy but in this volume of the series Paul T’Sosi, father-in-law to Thomas, moves to the forefront.

Paul lives close to the old Navajo ways. He has a strong belief in his people's mysticism, legends and superstitions. His brother, the Witch of Ganado, has placed a curse on friends and family. Death lingers around every turn it seems. Our central characters are not above suspicion.

The book description gives an excellent overview of the setting at the beginning of the story. Once again author R. Allen Chappell draws on his intimate knowledge of the Navajo people, culture, ancient beliefs and traditions.

Chappell has earned a place beside Tony and Anne Hillerman. All know their genre and excel at their craft.

Magpie Speaks has a somewhat dark tone but is well worth the read.

I strongly recommend Magpie Speaks for readers of Navajo Mysteries.

Magpie Speaks A Navajo Nation Mystery (Navajo Nation Mysteries Book 5)
There may be those who do not care for "Magpie Speaks", but they would be those who do not care for the Navajo people. This book should be a required reading in Minorities Study classes. My advice is If you didn't like this book, read it again and pay attention!! This is a priceless character study of the culture, attitude and mindset of a people. We need to care about such things.
Magpie Speaks makes Chappell's other books more meaningful. It is obvious that Mr. Chappell knows about the Navajo's daily life better than any other writer. I am now re-reading "Boy Made of Dawn" because of the information contained in "Magpie Speaks". Chappell's books are reference material for me and Magpie Speaks is his best writing. Write on Mr. Chappell!!!
